Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
