Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
