Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
