RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
